IMD sees depression over Gangetic West Bengal in 24 hours; issues red alert

MUMBAI – The low pressure area over gangetic West Bengal is likely to move northwestward and concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. The bureau has issued red alert for extremely heavy rains over parts of Odisha, coastal West Bengal, and southeast Jharkhand for Monday and over Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of eastern and central India till Sunday. Very heavy rainfall is expected over west Madhya Pradesh on Monday, east Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, over Jharkhand till Wednesday, over Odisha and gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday, and over Bihar on Tuesday and Wednesday, IMD said. Light to moderate rainfall at most places accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over eastern and central India during the next seven days with moderate to intense lightning over Bihar Monday.
The weather bureau also expects extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Rajasthan till Tuesday and heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India till Sunday. Very heavy rains are likely over Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, over Uttarakhand on Tuesday and east Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
The bureau expects heavy rainfall over parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura till Tuesday with very heavy rainfall over Meghalaya on Tuesday. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Gujarat on Monday, and heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan and Goa, ghat areas of central Maharashtra, Saurashtra, and Kutch on Monday. The bureau sees heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of south India such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka till Sunday. Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km per hour is very likely over the southern peninsular region of the country in the next five days, IMD said. End
