NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Heavy Industries Friday said incentives will now be provided for electric trucks under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement scheme, with a maximum incentive of INR 960,000 per vehicle. The ministry expects the scheme to help support the deployment of around 5,600 electric trucks across India, it said in a press release.
"To qualify for the incentives, the scrapping of old, polluting trucks is mandatoryensuring a dual benefit of modernising vehicle fleets and reducing emissions," the release said.
Incentives will be provided upfront through a reduction in the purchase price and will be reimbursed to the original equipment manufacturers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Demand incentives will be provided to N2 and N3 category electric trucks. Trucks classified under N2 category are those which have a gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 tonnes and up to 12 tonnes. Those exceeding 12 tonnes and up to 55 tonnes are categorised under N3.
"A dedicated provision for 1,100 e-trucks registered in Delhi has been made, with an estimated outlay of Rs 100 crore (INR 1 billion), aimed at addressing the capital's serious air quality challenges," the release said. "Diesel trucks, though constituting only 3% of the total vehicle population, contribute to 42% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and significantly worsen air pollution," the release quoted Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy as saying.
For companies to claim the benefits, the battery must provide a warranty of five years or 500,000 kilometres, whichever is completed earlier. The vehicle and motor should have warranty of five years or 250,000 kilometres, whichever is earlier, the ministry said.
Steel Authority of India Ltd. has committed to procure 150 electric trucks over the next two years and has set a target to ensure that at least 15% of all vehicles hired across its units will be run by electricity. End
