MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh till Monday and said that there is a risk of low to moderate flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of the state's eastern region till Saturday.
There is a risk of flash floods in Anuppur, Balaghat, Chhatarpur, Chhindwara, Damoh, Dindori, Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Narshimapura, Niwari, Panna, Sagar, Satna, Seoni, Shahdol, Sidhi, Singrauli, Tikamgarh, and Umaria districts in eastern Madhya Pradesh. There is also a possibility for surface runoff or inundation in some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in the region, the weather bureau said.
According to data from the weather bureau, western Madhya Pradesh has received 56% above normal rainfall so far since Jun. 1 at 325.6 millimetres and eastern Madhya Pradesh recorded 479.9 millimetres of rainfall, 85% above normal. Of the 10 sub-divisions in central India, eastern Madhya Pradesh recorded the second-highest rainfall so far after Konkan and Goa, where the total rainfall since Jun. 1 was 1,147.8 millimetres.
The weather bureau also said heavy rainfall is likely over parts of eastern and central India for the next four to five days. Light or moderate rainfall at most places in the region accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speed reaching 30-40 km per hour, is likely over the region during the next seven days.
The said weather conditions are mainly due to a trough which is running from the northeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation over northern Chhattisgarh. The low-pressure area over southern Jharkhand and its neighbourhood has weakened. The associated cyclonic circulation with the low-pressure area that is over north Chhattisgarh is also the reason for heavy rains over central and eastern India.
There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Haryana and its neighbourhood, the weather department said. Additionally, another trough runs from southwest Uttar Pradesh to northwest Bay of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels. Under the influence of these weather systems, parts of northwest India are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this week and beginning of next week.
The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over eastern Rajasthan till Tuesday and over Uttarakhand on Tuesday and Wednesday. Uttar Pradesh is likely to record very heavy showers on Friday, it said, adding that northwest India could see light or moderate rainfall at most places along with thunderstorms. Lightning is likely over western the Himalayan region and many places over the plains during next seven days. End
