NEW DELHI – The first-year premium income of life insurance companies in India fell on year in June, the first annual decline in a month since February. The first-year premium income in June of all life insurance companies collectively was down 3.1% on year at INR 411.17 billion, data released by the Life Insurance Council Thursday showed. However, in the June quarter, first-year premiums were up 4.3% on year at INR 935.45 billion.

 

The slowdown was broad-based across both Life Insurance Corp. of India and large private life insurers. The public-sector insurer's first-year premiums fell 3.4% on year to INR 273.95 billion, while private life insurers' premiums were down by 2.5% on year at INR 137.22 billion. LIC's market share in premium income rose to 66.6% in June from 60.4% in May.

 

While SBI Life Insurance Co. and HDFC Life Insurance Co. Ltd.'s premiums income fell on year, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd. was an outlier, and registered a rise of 4.1% in premium income to INR 15.73 billion in June. As for the other two listed life insurers, SBI Life's first-year premium income fell 12.4% on year to INR 26.20 billion in June, while HDFC Life's fell 6.3% on year to INR 25.23 billion.

 

At 1439 IST, shares of LIC were down 2.3% at INR 924.85 on the National Stock Exchange, while HDFC Life's shares fell 1.5% to INR 774.75. Shares of ICICI Prudential Life were down 0.7% at INR 675.60, while those of those of SBI Life were up 0.4% to INR 1,822.10.
