MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops across the country progressed to 43.75 million hectares as of Friday, up more than 11% on year from 39.38 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to data from the agriculture ministry. The acreage under pulses rose significantly, driven by a jump in moong acreage, while that of coarse cereals also rose due to a sharp increase in bajra acreage, the data showed.

The area sown under paddy was up more than 7% at 6.93 million hectares as of Friday. Paddy is the largest grain crop, in terms of both acreage and output, sown during the kharif season.

The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, rose to 7.72 million hectares, up 21% on year from 6.38 million hectares a year ago. This includes a rise in acreage of major millets such as bajra and jowar, which are widely grown in the early kharif season. The area sown under maize, the second-largest grain crop, dipped slightly to 3.94 million hectares from 4.02 million hectares sown a year ago, the data showed. Bajra acreage rose sharply by nearly 84% on year to 3.08 million hectares.

The total area sown under all pulses so far was up more than 35% on year at 4.26 million hectares, according to the data. Moong acreage jumped more than 146% on year to 1.66 million hectares from 673,000 hectares last year. The acreage under urad also rose to 527,000 hectares from 502,000 hectares a year ago. However, the area under tur, the largest kharif legume in terms of both acreage and production, fell to 1.65 million hectares from 1.85 million hectares sown a year ago.

The area covered under all oilseeds rose 14% on year to 10.83 million hectares, the data showed. Acreage of groundnut was at 2.67 million hectares, up from 1.77 million hectares sown last year, while that of soybean also rose to 7.90 million hectares from 7.55 million hectares a year ago.

Sugarcane acreage so far stood at 5.52 million hectares against 5.49 million hectares sown in the previous year. The area sown under cotton rose slightly to 7.95 million hectares from 7.86 million hectares a year ago, according to the data.

The early onset of southwest monsoon has aided the sowing of kharif crops across the country. Monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1. From Jun. 1-Jul. 9, the country has received 15% above normal rainfall at 273.9 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. However, of the four homogenous regions, east and northeast India and south peninsular India have received below normal rainfall during the season, at 19% and 4%, respectively.

According to data from the ministry, kharif acreage in Rajasthan has risen a whopping 105% on year as of Friday. Gujarat's kharif acreage was up more than 30% on year, followed by Punjab with nearly 23% on-year rise and Chhattisgarh with 25% increase. Kharif acreage has also risen on a year-on-year basis in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

The area sown under kharif crops fell nearly 6% on year in Haryana, 4% in Uttar Pradesh, and 2% in Maharashtra as of Friday. Kharif acreage in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Karnataka is also down on year, the data showed.
