--Govt source: India team to soon visit US for further talks on trade deal
NEW DELHI - A delegation of Indian government officials is likely to visit the US soon for negotiations on the proposed trade deal, a commerce ministry official said Thursday, adding that the dates of the visit are yet to be finalised.
India and the US, who have been in discussions for a Bilateral Trade Agreement since February, are also simultaneously trying to finalise an early deal, the official said. A team of commerce ministry officials, led by Special Secretary and India's chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, returned from Washington on Friday after week-long negotiations on the proposed deal.
The Indian industry is hopeful that a preliminary deal would be announced very soon--before the US' country-wise reciprocal tariffs kick in from Aug. 1. US President Donald Trump, who has been sending individual letters to nations informing about the reciprocal tariffs since Monday, has not yet announced any duty for India.
While on Apr. 2, Trump had announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on India, it is not clear whether the US president would stick to the same 26% if he issues a tariff letter to New Delhi as well. The duty mentioned in the latest tariff letters sent to some of the nations so far is different from what was unveiled for them in April.
If imposed, the reciprocal tariffs may significantly hurt India's exports growth, as the US is India's top export destination with an over 15% share in total outbound shipments. India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion during the period, according to commerce ministry data. End
