NEW DELHI – In continuation to the exercise that started Monday, US President Donald Trump late Wednesday announced reciprocal tariffs for seven more nations, including Sri Lanka, Libya, Iraq, Moldova, Algeria, Brunei and the Philippines. There is no clarity yet on whether Trump will announce reciprocal tariffs on India or whether New Delhi will seal a trade deal with Washington.
In the latest tariff announcements, Trump declared a 30% tariff on Sri Lanka, Libya, and Iraq, and 25% on the other four. The tariff rates announced for all seven nations Wednesday are different from the duties Washington had unveiled on Apr. 2, before effecting a 90-day pause on the levy of the reciprocal tariffs. After the expiration of the pause, Trump has declared Aug. 1 as the new date for all reciprocal tariffs to come into effect.
On Monday and Tuesday, Trump had announced reciprocal tariffs for 14 countries. Trump will announce reciprocal tariffs for more nations over the next few days. It is yet to be seen if India will also be one of them.
On Apr. 2, Trump announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on India. If imposed, this may significantly hurt India's exports growth as the US is India's top export destination with over a 15% share in total outbound shipments. India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion during the period, according to commerce ministry data. End
