Namibia signs licensing pact with India to adopt UPI tech, says foreign min

NEW DELHI – Namibia Wednesday signed licensing agreement to adopt Unified Payment Interface technology following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Namibia President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Prime Minister Modi is on an official visit to Namibia for a day. The external affairs ministry said Namibia also submitted a letter of acceptance for joining of Global Biofuels Alliance and signed memorandum of understanding on setting up of entrepreneurship development centre in Namibia and on Cooperation in the field of health and medicine.

 

During the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Modi and Namibian President Nandi-Ndaitwah discussed further strengthening of bilateral ties, including in the areas of defence, maritime security, digital technology and UPI, agriculture, health and pharma, energy and critical minerals. 

 

The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the growth in bilateral trade. They also noted that full potential on trade was still to be tapped, the foreing ministry said. Both the leaders advocated discussion on India-Southern African Customs Union preferential trade agreement to be expedited to enhance the bilateral trade between the two countries. The proposed agreement aims to reduce tariffs and promote trade. Southern African Customs Union comprises South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini.

 

"Prime Minister noted that India would be scaling up development cooperation efforts through capacity building programmes for Namibian experts and exploring partnerships in setting up manufacturing facilities in Namibia. The prime minister offered India's support for Quick Impact development projects in the areas of agriculture, Information Technology, cyber security, healthcare, education, women empowerment and child welfare," the foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.
