NEW DELHI – India's agricultural exports can grow to INR 20.00 trillion from the current INR 4.50 trillion by strengthening food processing, improving branding, and adopting better packaging standards, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said in a release. India's agricultural export basket is diversifying with non-traditional products such as jamun, litchi, bottle gourd, and pineapple making inroads into the global markets, he added.

Recent shipments of jamun, also known as Indian blackberry, to the UK and litchis from Punjab to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Doha in Qatar signal rising demand for Indian farm goods beyond staples, Goyal said at the Indian Chamber of Commerce's session on Krishi Vikram here Wednesday. The minister stressed the need to build self-reliance across the agriculture value chain to withstand global supply disruptions. Drip irrigation, he noted, could be a game changer in improving productivity and climate resilience in India's rain-fed agriculture landscape. Drip irrigation and modern pumps not only conserve resources, but also improve yields and export readiness by making crop output more predictable, he said.

The minister also pitched for accelerating natural and organic farming, backed by blockchain-based certification to enhance global trust. Government support, he said, would extend to packaging, product design, and branding to improve India's agricultural visibility in overseas markets.

Goyal highlighted recent initiatives such as the creation of the Turmeric Board, doubling of coffee exports, and growth in shipments of spices. He added that 1,400 mandis have been linked to the e-NAM platform to boost price transparency, and the INR 1.00-trillion agriculture infrastructure fund is driving investment into farm logistics and storage.

The minister also pointed to the "Drone Didi" programme, under which 150,000 women have been trained to operate drones to spray fertilisers, and urged agri-entrepreneurs to adopt global best practices in intercropping, horticulture, and floriculture. He concluded by reiterating the government's commitment to raising farmers' incomes and keeping input costs in check through increased subsidies, particularly for fertilisers. "With collective effort and innovation, Indian agriculture can transform local produce into global success stories," he said.  End
