NEW DELHI – The members of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee Tuesday sought to know from the officials of aviation ministry the status of probe into Ahmedabad plane crash and also asked questions over sudden surge in air fares. According to sources, the representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation told the committee that the data of the black box of Air India plane, which crashed on Jun. 12 in Ahmedabad, has been decoded by the investigators. Around 260 people were killed in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. The officials also informed the committee that the report on the accident is being prepared and will be submitted, sources said.

The committee meeting was attended by the representatives of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other concerned organisations including airport operators and airlines. The agenda of the meeting was "levy and regulation of fees, tariffs, user charges etc. on public infrastructure and other public utilities". Sources said that Air India officials informed the committee that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was one of the safest aircraft in operation.

The members also raised questions over a sudden hike in fare of air tickets, for instance in the aftermath of Pahalgam terrorist attack in April in which 26 people were killed. Ticket prices for an economy seat from Srinagar to Delhi reportedly surged to INR 65,000, up from the usual INR 7,000-8,000. Members demanded that the government and industry should frame a mechanism to regulate sudden surge in air fares, a committee member aware of the development said.

Air India Chief Executive Officer Wilson Campbell and top officials from IndiGo and Akasa Air, as well as industry stakeholders, were also present in the meeting. End
