NEW DELHI – Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles grew 80% on year in June, mainly driven by a robust increase in sales by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Hyundai Motor India Ltd. However, India's top electric passenger vehicle-seller Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. saw its growth moderate to a paltry 2.5% on year in June to 4,708 units, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said Tuesday. Overall, companies sold 13,178 electric cars last month.

Riding on the back of newly launched fully electric cars BE 6 and XEV 9e, retail sales by M&M in June soared sixfold on year to 3,029 units. This made the Mumbai-based auto giant the third-best seller in June. In May, its dealerships sold 2,632 electric cars.

Closely following them was JSW MG Motor India Pvt. Ltd., which sold 3,972 electric passenger vehicles in June, up nearly three times on year. Hyundai Motor likely gained from sales of the electric Creta, as its sales grew just over eightfold in June to 512 units.

The market share of electric cars increased to 4.4% in June, up from 4.1% in May and 2.5% in June last year, the federation said.

ELECTRIC 2-WHEELERS

Indian dealerships sold 105,355 electric two-wheelers in June, up 31.7% on year. Sales by TVS Motor Co. Ltd. were the highest last month, as the Chennai-based company sold 25,300 units, up 80% on year. Bajaj Auto Ltd. took the second spot with sales more than doubling to 23,032 units.

Ola Electric Technologies Pvt. Ltd.'s sales growth fell sharply by 45% in June to 20,190 units. Ather Energy Ltd. sold 14,526 electric two-wheelers in June, compared to 6,216 units a year ago.

The penetration of electric two-wheelers continues to rise as the market share of the greener variants in June inched up to 7.3% in June from 6.1% in May, and from 5.8% in June last year.

3-WHEELERS, COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Sales of electric three-wheelers increased 16% on year but fell 8% sequentially to 60,559 units in June, the federation said. Sales by M&M grew 53% on year to 7,316 units.

Bajaj Auto sold 6,478 electric three-wheelers in June, against 2,546 units last year. TVS Motor's sales rocketed to 1,655 units in June from just 20 units last year.

The market share of electric three-wheelers fell to 60.2% in June from 63.2% in May but remained higher than 55.4% in June last year.

Retail sales of electric commercial vehicles grew to 1,146 units last month from 515 units a year ago. While sales of electric commercial vehicles by Tata Motors fell 7% on year to 309 units, sales by the Mahindra group increased to 171 units in June from 27 units a year ago.  End
