MUMBAI – Indian equity indices closed slightly higher on Tuesday, making most of the gains towards the last half an hour of trade on reports that a trade deal between India and the US is likely in a few hours.

US President Donald Trump earlier in the day extended the deadline for reciprocal tariffs to Aug. 1. Most Asian indices closed higher as sentiment was upbeat following the extension of the deadline. Trump also issued letters to 14 countries, including South Korea and Japan, notifying the new tariff rates.

The Nifty 50 closed at 25522.50 points, 61.20 points or 0.2%. Shares of financial services and information technology companies ended higher, helping the Nifty 50 to recover from the day's lows. The 50-stock index, which traded in a narrow range, closed above the key resistance of 25500 after failing to do so for four straight sessions. The BSE Sensex closed at 83712.51 points, up 270.01 points or 0.3%.

However, in contrast to headline indices, broader market indices ended lower due to selling pressure. The Nifty Smallcap 100 and the Nifty Smallcap 50 closed down 0.3% each. The Nifty Midcap 150 and the Nifty Midcap 100 indices closed down 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively.

The Nifty Realty index was the top gainer among the sectoral indices, closing 1% higher. Barring Macrotech Developers, all the stocks on the Nifty Realty index closed higher. Brigade Enterprises, Prestige Estates Projects and The Phoenix Mills were up 2-3%. Macrotech Developers ended 0.2% lower after the company's pre-sales growth in the June quarter slowed down for the second straight quarter and was slower than the company's full year guidance of 20%. The company reported a pre-sales growth of 10% in the June quarter.

Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Private Bank, and Nifty Bank indices closed 0.5-0.7%, mainly due to a rise in shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank. Shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank closed up 3.5% after the bank reported robust business in the June quarter. The bank late Monday said its advances rose 14% year-on-year as of Jun. 30.

The Nifty Consumer Durables index fell the most among the sectoral indices. The sectoral index was dragged down by sharp losses in Titan Co., which fell over 6% on disappointing jewellery sales during the quarter due to higher gold prices. The company's overall domestic jewellery sales rose 18% on year in the June quarter, but were slower than the 23% rise seen in the March quarter.

Most pharmaceutical stocks closed down, with Aurobindo Pharma and Dr.Reddy's Laboratories falling 2-3%. Global brokerage Macquarie downgraded the rating on both companies and cut target prices for a host of other stocks. The downgrade was due to limited earnings visibility, regulatory challenges, and pricing pressures. The broking firm said both companies will likely face sustained headwinds in the US generics market. Meanwhile, brokerage firm HSBC raised the rating on Divi's Laboratories to "buy" and increased the target price by nearly 60% to INR 7,900. Shares of the company closed 0.7% higher.
