--CRISIL arm: Cost of non-vegetarian thali down 6% on yr at INR 54.8 in June

--CRISIL arm: Cost of vegetarian thali down 8% on year at INR 27.1 in June

MUMBAI - The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali fell by 8% on year in June to INR 27.1 due to a decline in vegetable prices, CRISIL Intelligence said in a report. Similarly, the cost of a non-vegetarian thali fell 6% on year to INR 54.8 in June, driven by lower broiler prices. However, on a monthly basis, prices for both the thalis rose due to an increase in prices of ingredients. The price of a vegetarian meal in June was up 3% on month while the non-vegetarian meal increased by 4%, the report said.

On a yearly basis, tomato prices fell 24% on year to INR 32 per kilogram in June, down from INR 42 a kg a year ago. Prices of potato and onion also declined by 20% and 27%, respectively. Last year, production of tomato, potato, and onion was sharply down due to lower acreage and yields, according to the report. However, on a monthly basis, tomato and potato prices rose 36% and 4%, respectively. Onion prices remained largely unchanged, the report said.

Prices of broiler rose 5% on month in June which pushed up the price of non-vegetarian thali for the period. "Broiler prices rose amid reduced supply caused by extreme heat, which led to higher mortality and slower growth in chickens," the report said. However, on a yearly basis, price of the non-vegetarian thali fell owing to lower vegetable and broiler prices. "Along with lower vegetable prices, an estimated 3% on-year drop in broiler prices — which make up about 50% of a non-vegetarian thali's cost — drove down the cost of a non-vegetarian thali," it said.

Despite a reduction in basic customs duty on crude edible oils, vegetable oil prices surged 19% on year as the lower costs have not yet been completely passed on to customers, the report said. "Additionally, a 6% on-year increase in liquefied petroleum gas cylinder prices limited the decline in overall thali cost (on year)," it said.

"In coming months, however, we expect thali costs to inch up sequentially as seasonal changes push up vegetable prices," Pushan Sharma, director- research, CRISIL Intelligence, said in a statement. "Onion prices are expected to rise moderately due to the absence of fresh arrivals and controlled release of stored rabi stock. For tomato, weak summer sowing is expected to lead to a sequential increase in prices, adding to the upward pressure on thali costs."  End
