AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major ports in India during Apr-Jun rose 5.62% on year to 220.17 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This rise was again mainly led by an uptrend in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which rose 7.62% on year during Apr-Jun to 65.48 million tonnes. This type of cargo accounts for nearly one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across country. 

 

Other than crude oil, container traffic in tonnage terms increased 10.6% on year to 51.35 million tonnes, thermal coal cargo volume for Apr-Jun rose 2.58% on year to 35.05 million tonnes, iron ore pellets rose 0.75% on year to 13.7 million tonnes, and raw fertilisers were up 19.3% on year to 2.58 million tonnes. Coking coal volume rose 1.33% on year to 16.04 million tonnes while miscellaneous traffic for Apr-Jun was up 3.25% on year at 26.30 million tonnes.

 

Volume of finished fertilisers handled in the first three months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) was down 12.83% on year at 1.54 million tonnes. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, fell 0.51% on year to 8.14 million tonnes.

 

Among specific ports, Paradip Port handled the highest traffic of 39.25 million tonnes in Apr-Jun, followed closely by Deendayal Port at 37.91 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 24.2 million tonnes.
