MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices bounced back in the final hour of trading and closed slightly higher on Friday, as financial services and information technology saw huge buying interest. Consumer-facing sectors like retailers and automobile companies were the worst performers in the session.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25461 points, up 55.70 points or 0.2%. The index ended the week lower after rising in the previous two weeks. With this, the 50-stock index has closed lower in 14 out of the 26 weeks in the first half of 2025. Even then, the index is sharply higher than at the end of 2024 and is only less than 1000 points away from the record high of 26277.35 points in September last year.
The BSE Sensex closed at 83432.89 points, up 193.42 points or 0.2%. Broader market indices were mixed, with small-cap indices closing in the green and their mid-cap peers closing marginally lower.
Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty Oil & Gas index was the top gainer, closing 1.1% higher. Bharat Petroleum Corp., Indraprastha Gas, Indian Oil Corp., and Mahanagar Gas ended 2-4% higher during the session. The Nifty Realty closed 0.9% higher after six straight sessions of losses. The sectoral index declined 5.5% during the period, mainly due to losses in Macrotech Developers and Brigade Enterprises, which closed 3-4% lower during the week.
Capital market-related stocks, such as Central Depository Services India, Angel One, Nuvama Wealth Management, and BSE, closed 3-11% lower Friday on concerns about a decline in volumes in the derivatives market after the Securities and Exchange Board of India banned four entities of the Jane Street group from participating in the securities market over allegations of index manipulation. Analysts speculated that Jane Street and its entities are clients of Angel One and Nuvama Wealth.
Among other stocks, Trent closed nearly 12% after touching its lowest level since February intraday, as the company's management cautioned about a slower growth trajectory in the coming years. Nuvama Institutional Equities downgraded the rating on Trent to 'hold' from 'buy' and cut its target price by 11% to INR 5,884.
Bajaj Finance ended nearly 2% higher and was the top gainer of the Nifty 50 index. The non-banking finance company said its assets under management rose 25% as of Jun. 30. Marico came off highs and closed over 2% higher after the company said its consolidated revenue grew in the low-20s on year in the June quarter, indicating a strong start for likely double-digit growth on a full-year basis.
