MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over the ghat areas of central Maharashtra on Sunday and Monday, and over Himachal Pradesh on Monday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over both the regions, the weather department said.

 

An upper cyclonic circulation is currently lying over the northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal, the weather department said. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over many parts of east and central India in the next seven days, the weather department said. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of east Madhya Pradesh on Friday, the department said. 

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen over parts of northwest India over the next seven days, the weather bureau said. Light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over the western Himalayan region and over most parts of the northwestern plains in the next seven days, the bureau said. 

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan, Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and Gujarat over the next seven days, while heavy rainfall is seen over Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday, the weather department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour, is likely over west India in the next seven days, the weather bureau said. 

 

Light or moderate showers, with the occasional short spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are expected to continue over northeast India over the next seven days, the department said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and over Meghalaya on Friday and Sunday, it said.

 

In south peninsular India, heavy rainfall is seen over some parts of the region till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka till Sunday and over south interior Karnataka on Friday, the bureau said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rayalaseema in the next seven days, it said.  End
