MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Thursday said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next five days. Similar weather conditions are also expected in Punjab, Haryana, and west Rajasthan till Monday, the weather department said.

 

At least 51 people have lost their lives and 22 others are still missing in Himachal Pradesh as torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides wreaked havoc across the state, according to media reports. 

 

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over east Rajasthan Thursday, the department said, for which it has issued a red alert. Light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over most parts of the western Himalayan region and parts of the plains in northwest India in the next seven days. 

 

An offshore trough at mean sea level is running along the coasts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan, Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and Gujarat in the next seven days while heavy rainfall is seen over Saurashtra and Kutch in the same period, as per the weather agency. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour, is likely over western India in the next seven days, the weather bureau said. 

 

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of south Konkan or south coastal Maharashtra and Goa Thursday. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over the ghat areas of central Maharashtra on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday, it said.

 

In east and central India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over most parts in the next six to seven days, the weather bureau said. Light or moderate showers, with the occasional short spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are likely over northeast India in the next seven days and extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Meghalaya on Sunday, the department said.

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen over some parts of the southern peninsula till Wednesday, the department said, adding extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka Thursday.  End
