NEW DELHI – All segments of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s passenger vehicle line-up, barring mid-size cars, saw despatches contract year-on-year in June as demand continued to remain under pressure. Maruti's India passenger vehicle wholesale sales hit an 18-month low. While the domestic environment remained weak, the company's exports likely hit a record high, according to data available with Informist.

Maruti Suzuki sold 167,993 units to dealers in India and overseas, down 6.3% on year. Analysts at Nomura Research had expected a sharper 8% on-year fall. This is the first on-year contraction in the automaker's overall sales since it fell nearly 4% in August last year.

In India, the company sold 130,151 units in June, down 12% on year. This includes sales of its passenger vehicles, Super Carry commercial vehicle, and sales to other original equipment manufacturers. Exports by Maruti Suzuki grew nearly 22% on year to 37,842 units. While this growth was lower than the 80% on year growth registered in May, in absolute terms, this is likely the largest number of cars the company has exported in its history in any given month.

Domestic passenger vehicle despatches, which form nearly 71% of Maruti Suzuki's overall sales, contracted 13% on year to 118,906 units. This is the lowest number of passenger vehicles sold by Maruti Suzuki since December 2023. The WagonR-maker's passenger car wholesale sales fell 17% on year to 61,619 units in June.

Of this, sales of mini cars like Alto and S-Presso stood at 6,414 units, down 32% on year. Despatches of its compact cars such as the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, and Ignis fell 15% on year to 54,177 units.

Sales of its mid-size sedan Ciaz, production of which was recently ceased, saw its despatches nearly double to 1,028 units in June from 572 units last year. Maruti Suzuki sold 47,947 utility vehicles to dealerships in June, down over 8% on year. This is the first and the steepest contraction registered by this sub-segment since July last year.

The company despatched 9,340 Eeco vans in June to dealerships in India, down over 13% on year. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers grew over 6% on year in June to 8,812 units. Such sales, in essence, are vehicles later rebadged and sold by Toyota India.

In Apr-Jun, Maruti Suzuki sold 527,861 automobile units in India and abroad, registering a modest 1% on-year growth.

Tuesday, shares of the company closed 0.3% higher at INR 12,442 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
