--Cabinet OKs INR-18.53-bln for 4-laning Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram highway

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved a four-lane road project in Tamil Nadu. The Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram section road project will be developed on hybrid annuity mode at a total cost of INR 18.53 billion.

Currently, the two-lane National Highway 87 connects Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkodi. However, significant congestion is experienced due to high traffic volume, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor, according to a government release.

"Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with 2 major railway stations (Madurai and Rameshwaram), 1 Airport (Madurai), and 2 minor ports (Pamban and Rameshwaram), thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region," the release said.  End
