Major subsidies spend falls Apr-May on lower food subsidy outgo

NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) fell 6.3% on year to INR 512.53 billion, data from the Controller General of Accounts released Monday showed. Expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-May accounted for 13% of the Budget target of INR 3.83 trillion for FY26.
The government's fertiliser subsidy bill rose 45.2% on year to INR 232.62 billion in Apr-May while the food subsidy outgo declined 27.4% to INR 279.91 billion.
For FY26, the government has pegged an expenditure on major subsidies at INR 3.83 trillion, compared with INR 3.88 trillion spent in FY25. The following table details major subsidies in Apr-May (in INR billion):
