NEW DELHI – The government has extended the country-wise quantitative restrictions on import of low ash metallurgical coke for another six months till Dec. 31, 2025, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification Monday. In a separate notification, the government also extended the minimum import price of INR 20,108 per tonne on import of soda ash for six months till Dec. 31.

Low-ash variant metallurgical coke is an important raw material used in steel manufacturing and other industrial processes. Soda ash or disodium carbonate is a salt of carbonic acid that is used for glass manufacturing. It is also used in detergents, soaps, and paper. India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, had first imposed these restrictions in January for a period of six months.

The quantitative restrictions on import of low ash metallurgical coke were from Australia, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK and others. For soda ash, imports would be free only if the minimum import price is more than INR 20,108 per tonne.

Following the initial restrictions, while many steel producers expressed concerns of potential hinderence of capacity expansion plans due to difficulty in sourcing the raw materials, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had urged steelmakers to source met coke locally.  End
