NEW DELHI – The kharif crop acreage as of Friday was over 26.2 million hectares, up 11.5% from 23.5 million hectares a year ago, data released Monday by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare showed. The rise in acreage has likely been driven by early onset of the southwest monsoon and widespread rainfall across the country. The acreages under crops such as rice, pulses, and coarse cereals has risen significantly so far this season.
The area under paddy surged to 3.50 million hectares, rising over 47% from 2.38 million hectares a year ago. This sharp rise comes amid strong demand from ethanol makers, along with a good hike in the minimum support price for paddy this season. The minimum support prices for paddy common and Grade A varieties in 2025–26 is INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg, respectively.
Sowing of pulses stood at 2.1 million hectares, up over 37% from 1.5 million hectares last year. The increase was largely driven by moong, which saw acreage nearly double to 858,000 hectares from 430,000 hectares. Urad sowing also jumped to 235,000 hectares from 142,000 hectares. In contrast, the area under tur declined slightly to 835,000 hectares from 867,000 hectares. Farmers appear to be interested in moong this year, incentivised by a higher minimum support price of INR 8,768 per 100 kg compared with INR 8,000 per 100 kg for tur.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, rose to 4.18 million hectares, up over 19% from 3.50 million hectares a year ago. This includes rise across major millets such as bajra and jowar, as well as maize, which is widely grown in early kharif season. Maize acreage rose to 2.4 million hectares from 2.1 million hectares.
The pace of sowing is likely to increase in the coming weeks as monsoon continues to spread and reservoir levels improve. Kharif crops, typically planted between June and early August, account for nearly half of India's annual food grain output.
Sowing of oilseeds rose to 4.9 million hectares, from 4.1 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage increased to 1.6 million hectares from 814,000 hectares. Soybean was planted on 3.20 million hectares, slightly lower than 3.18 million hectares a year ago. Sugarcane planting rose to 5.52 million hectares compared to 5.49 million hectares a year ago. Cotton sowing declined to 5.5 million hectares from 6.0 million hectares.
The following table details the sowing of key kharif crops, in hectares, compared with year-ago levels and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
