Govt hikes railway passenger fares, AC tickets to go up by 2 paisa per km

NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Railways Monday said it will hike passenger ticket fares from Tuesday in a bid to streamline fare structures and enhance the financial sustainability of passenger services. Fares for the ordinary non-air-conditioned class for travel have been hiked by up to INR 15 per ticket, while air-conditioned class tickets have been increased by 2 paisa per kilometre from Tuesday.
There will be no change in fares of suburban travel and for ordinary class tickets up to 500 kilometres on non-suburban routes. Other passengers will have to pay higher starting Tuesday, the ministry said in a release Monday.
Fares will be hiked by INR 5 for ordinary non-air-conditioned class for travel between 501 kilometres and 1,500 kilometres, by INR 10 for a distance of 1,501-2,500 kilometres, and by INR 15 for a distance of 2,501 and 3,000 kilometres. Fares for passengers travelling in sleeper class and first class in non-suburban air-conditioned trains have been hiked by 0.50 paisa per kilometre.
Fares for second class, sleeper class and first class on non-air-conditioned mail and express trains will be increased by 1 paisa per kilometre each.
Passengers travelling in air-conditioned chair car, 3-tier, 2-tier, first class, executive class, and Executive Anubhuti class will have to shell out an additional 2 paisa per kilometre. These fares will apply to all premier trains and special trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, AC Vistadome coaches, Anubhuti coaches, and Ordinary non-suburban services, according to the press release.
Reservation fees, superfast charges, and other charges will remain unchanged. End
