MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department sees the southwest monsoon in an active phase, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall over several parts of the country in the next 6–7 days. Under the influence of a low pressure area and an east-west trough, multiple parts of east and central India are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next seven days, the weather department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour is expected over most of the region in the same period, the department said.

The southwest monsoon covered entire India on Sunday, nine days before the normal date of Jul. 8, the weather bureau said on Sunday. This is the earliest that the monsoon has covered the entire country since 2020, when it did so on Jun. 26, it said in a post on social media platform X.

The weather bureau has forecast very heavy rainfall over west Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday, over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana on Monday, and over east Rajasthan on Saturday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand on Monday, the bureau said, for which it has issued a red alert. Heavy rainfall is likely over several parts of northwest India till Sunday, it said.

In west India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and Gujarat in the next seven days. In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura on Wednesday and Thursday and over Assam and Meghalaya on Sunday, the bureau said.

Some parts of south peninsular India are expected to see heavy rainfall till Sunday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema till Wednesday, the department said.  End
