Monsoon coveres entire India on Sun, 9 days before normal date, says IMD

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon covered entire India on Sunday, nine days before the normal date of Jul. 8, the India Meteorological Department said in a press release. The monsoon advanced into rest of Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi on Sunday.
According to a post by the westher department on social media platform X, this is the earliest that the monsson has covered the entire country since 2020, when it had done so on Jun. 26. Data by the weather bureau shows India has received 8% above-normal rainfall at 170.3 millimetres during the southwest monsoon so far.
However, the onset of the monsoon over Delhi has been delayed by two days compared to the normal date of Jun. 27. Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Firozpur in Punjab, Sonipat in Haryana, Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Purulia in West Bengal, and the centre of the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts, the weather department said.
This year, the southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1, and by May 29 the monsoon current covered southern and northeast India entirely, along with parts of east and central India. However, after May 29, the monsoon was in a weak phase and resumed its advance only on Jun. 16. End
