NEW DELHI – The government on Saturday extended the term of Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Ravi Agrawal by one year till Jun. 30, 2026, according to a notification by Appointments Commitee of the Cabinet. Earlier, Agrawal was appointed as the head of the apex direct tax body on Jul. 1, 2024 for a year.
Agrawal will continue to be the chairman till Jun. 30, 2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the notification said. He has been a part of two budget-making exercises - full Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and Budget for FY26.
In the Budget for FY26, the government announced a tax bonanza to boost consumption, making tweaks to the new income tax structure to effectively make income up to INR 1.275 million exempt from income tax.
Agrawal is a 1988 batch Indian Revenue Service officer who served as Member (Administration) in the Central Board of Direct Taxes before taking over as the chairman after Nitin Gupta's term ended. End
