IMD issues red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand Mon, Tue

NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand on Monday and Tuesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours, and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

The bureau also expects extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh on Sunday and Monday. The department also expects heavy rainfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh till Friday. Light to moderate rainfall over most places accompanied with thuderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour is likely over northwest India in the next seven days.

 

The weather department expects heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of west India such as Konkan, Goa, the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and Gujarat in the next seven days. It expects heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha till Friday, with very heavy rains over west Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. Light to moderate rainfall at most places accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour is likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand during next seven days, it said.

 

In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, over Assam and Meghalaya from Wednesday to Friday, and over Nagaland on Tuesday and Wednesday. In south India, very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala on Saturday. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

 

The bureau said that conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of the country in the next two days.  End
