Global alumina production in May up 3% on month, says aluminium institute

NEW DELHI – Global alumina production rose 3% on month to 12.63 million tonnes in May, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On a yearly basis, alumina output was up 3.5%.

 

The average daily global alumina production fell to 407,300 tonnes in May from a revised 408,400 tonnes in April, the data showed. Alumina production in China was 7.47 million tonnes in May, up over 3% on month. The country's output, which accounted for nearly 60% of global alumina production, was up nearly 4% from a year ago, the data showed.

 

In the Oceania region, alumina output fell marginally to 1.43 million tonnes in May. In Africa and Asia, excluding China, alumina production rose to 1.24 million tonnes last month from 1.20 million tonnes in April. In Europe, production rose by 38,000 tonnes to 630,000 tonnes in May and the output in South America rose to 1.03 million tonnes in May from 992,000 tonnes in April, the data showed.

 

According to the data, global production of primary aluminium rose over 3% to 6.25 million tonnes in May. On Friday, the most-active July aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India closed 0.3% lower at INR 247.50 per kg. On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract closed 0.3% higher at $2,598.85 per tonne.  End
