NEW DELHI – The government has restricted the import of certain items from Bangladesh, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification Friday. The items whose import has been restricted include jute, textile bast fibres, and woven fabrics, as per the notification.

The government has imposed port restrictions on the import of flax tow and waste, single flax yarn, single yarn of jute and other textile bast fibres, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute. Import of these items from Bangladesh is not allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border, the notification said. However, imports of these items are allowed through the Nhava Sheva seaport, also known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Navi Mumbai.

The import restrictions will not apply to Bangladesh's exports to Nepal and Bhutan transiting through India, as per the notification. "However, re-export of the aforesaid Bangladesh goods to India from Nepal/Bhutan shall not be allowed," the government said.

India imported goods worth $2.0 billion from Bangladesh in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). Among the items whose imports have been restricted, India imported jute and other textile bast fibres worth $80 million in FY25, data from the commerce ministry showed.  End
