MUMBAI – A fresh upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over north Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal by Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region in the next 24 hours, which is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of east and central India till Thursday, the weather department said.

The department said extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Saurashtra on Friday, for which it has issued a red alert. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and the Gujarat region in the next seven days, the department said. Over the rest of west India, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the next seven days, it said.

In northwest India, heavy rainfall is likely over some parts, with very heavy rainfall expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, east Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, the weather bureau said.  A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km per hour is seen over most of the region in the next seven days, the bureau said.

Very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, and over Nagaland on Friday and Wednesday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over most of northeast India in the next seven days, it said.

In south peninsular India, very heavy rainfall is seen over Kerala till Saturday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is seen over some parts of the region till Thursday, while scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and interior Karnataka in the next seven days.

The northern limit of the southwest monsoon is currently passing over Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jhunjhunu, and Bharatpur in Rajasthan, over Sonipat in Haryana, and over Rampur and Anup Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, the weather department said. The monsoon is likely to cover the remaining parts of the country in the next two to three days, earlier than the usual date of Jul. 8, the department said.  End
