MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to cover the remaining parts of India in the next three to four days, earlier than the usual date of Jul. 8, the India Meteorological Department said Thursday. As of Thursday, the monsoon advanced into parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, it said. The northern limit of the monsoon is passing through Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jhunjhunu, and Bharatpur in Rajasthan, Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, Sonipat in Haryana, and Anup Nagar in West Bengal.
This year, the southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1, and by May 29, the monsoon current covered southern and northeast India entirely, along with parts of east and central India. However, after May 29, the monsoon was in a weak phase and resumed advancing only on Jun. 16. Barring parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh and Delhi, the monsoon has covered the remaining parts of the country.
The weather bureau said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of west India during the next seven days. Isolated heavy showers are likely over Marathwada on Thursday. West India is likely to receive light to moderate showers during the next seven days. It also said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over northwest India during the next seven days. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour are likely over northwest India till Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure area has formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday. This weather system is likely to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
Under the influence of this weather system, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east and central India till Wednesday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Jharkhand during the week.
The weather agency also said very heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Monday. Northeast India is likely to receive light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning for the next seven days. A few parts of the region are also likely to receive heavy rainfall during the next seven days.
Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and south interior Karnataka on Thursday, because of which the weather department issued a red alert for the day. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. End
