MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to miss its normal date of onset of Jun. 27 over Delhi and is expected this weekend, according to private weather forecaster Skymet. Earlier this week, the agency said the monsoon could hit Delhi on Tuesday, which would have been the earliest arrival of monsoon in the national capital since 2013. However, Skymet Thursday said despite most of the parameters like humidity, winds, clouds, and temperature aligning with monsoon-like conditions, the rains had failed to turn up till Wednesday.
There is a cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan and neighbouring parts of Madhya Pradesh, the weather agency said. An east-west trough from this weather system is extending eastward, across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and connecting with the cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of north Odisha and West Bengal, it said. This trough is far from south of the Delhi region and therefore, may not allow the monsoon showers to start over Delhi on Thursday, it added.
Under the influence of a western disturbance, the trough has a tendency to shift northward slowly and it may cause light to scattered showers over the city late on Friday, the weather agency said. "But it may not suffice to announce the arrival of the monsoon. The weekend seems to be a safe bet, when the typical monsoon showers will be seen, both on Saturday and Sunday," the agency said.
According to the agency, the east-west trough is likely to oscillate and finally shift to north of Delhi on Saturday. "The movement of the trough across any region invariably triggers rain and thundershowers. Delhi is likely to see decent showers late on Saturday evening," it said. These showers are likely to continue over the city till Wednesday.
As of Wednesday, the southwest monsoon has advanced into more parts of Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. Since Jun. 1, the country has recorded 9?ove normal showers at 146.6 millimetres. However, Delhi recorded 28?low normal or deficient showers at 32.2 millimetres from Jun. 1 to Thursday. End
