NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump on Wednesday asserted that Iran's nuclear facilities have been obliterated following the US air strikes on Sunday. Trump, responding to media after attending the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit, said that the US agencies collected additional intelligence and also spoke to people who have seen the site. Trump's remarks came in the backdrop of media reports claiming that the US strikes did not destroy Iran's nuclear programme completely and likely set it back by months.
"Monumental damage was done to all nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term! The white structure shown is deeply imbedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level," Trump said.
The White House, in a statement issued on damages to Iran's nuclear programme, referred to remarks made by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, who reportedly admitted that Iran's "nuclear installations have been badly damaged" in the US air strikes.
The US on Sunday launched air strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran--Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The US action came nearly 10 days after Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion' targeting Iran's nuclear facilities, military infrastructure and leadership. Two days after US strikes, Trump announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel on Tuesday.
The White House also quoted the Israel Atomic Energy Commission which affirmed that the "devastating" air strikes by the US, combined with Israeli strikes on the nuclear facilities have set back Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years. The commission noted that the US strikes on Fordow destroyed the site's critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility inoperable. It further said that the achievement can continue indefinitely if Iran does not get access to nuclear material.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also asserted during an interview to Politico that the US air strikes and Israeli attacks have pushed Iran much further away from nuclear weapon. "The Iranian Nuclear Programme today looks nothing like it did just a week ago because of the US strikes and some strikes by Israel...They (Iran) are much further away from nuclear weapon today than they were before the President Trump took this action," Rubio said.
