NEW DELHI – The government has disbursed INR 215.34 billion to 12 manufacturing sectors under the Production Linked Incentive scheme since its inception in 2021, the commerce and industry ministry said Wednesday. The beneficiary sectors include large-scale electronics manufacturing, information technology hardware, bulk drugs, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who held a review meeting of the PLI scheme on Tuesday, asked the various ministries operating the PLI schemes to prepare a roadmap for the next five years on investment and disbursement.
The Union Cabinet had approved the PLI scheme for 14 manufacturing sectors in 2021-22 (Apr-Mar), with a total outlay of INR 1.97 trillion for five to seven years. However, the scheme has been extended by a year or two for several sectors, including automobiles and speciality steel, due to their inability to avail the incentives. Under the PLI scheme, the government offers incentives to companies for incremental sales of products manufactured in India over the year the scheme was announced for the sector.
In the current financial year, only eight of the 14 sectors are expected to avail of incentives under the PLI scheme. In the Budget for FY26, the government allocated INR 163.18 billion for the PLI scheme covering manufacturing of large-scale electronics, information technology hardware, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, white goods, speciality steel, and advanced chemistry cells but there was no allocation for bulk drugs, medical devices, telecom products, food products, solar modules, and drones.
