--Cabinet OKs INR 36.26 bln for extension of Pune Metro rail

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved the extension of the Pune Metro Rail project. The estimated cost of Phase-2 of the project is INR 36.26 billion, which will be equally shared by the central government, the Maharashtra government, and external agencies, the Centre said in a release.

The project is scheduled to be completed in four years, and will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corp. Ltd. The new elevated corridors will span 12.75 kilometres and include 13 stations.

Phase-2 of Pune Metro will have two corridors--Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi or Vitthalwadi. The new proposed corridors are an extension of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1, the release said.

"These extensions will serve key IT (information technology) hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network," the central government said.

Daily ridership for the entire Line 2 of Pune Metro is estimated at 96,000 in 2027 after the completion of the second phase, and is expected to rise to 349,000 in 2057. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced, the release said.  End
