MUMBAI - The southwest monsoon may cover the entire country by the end of this month, well ahead of the usual date of Jul. 8, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The monsoon is expected to cover most of the country in the next 24-48 hours, G.P. Sharma, president of meteorology and climate change, Skymet, told ET Now channel Wednesday.

The monsoon stream has been hovering near Delhi for the past 2-3 days, raising the possibility of an early onset in the national capital, the agency said. The normal date of onset of the monsoon over Delhi is Jun. 27. Prospects of the monsoon advancing into the remaining parts of Rajasthan earlier than normal are also increasing, it said.

Currently, two cyclonic circulations are active over north India. The axis of an elongated trough joining the two circulations has a tendency to generate more embedded small-scale circulations all along the stretch, the agency said. These circulations are expected to develop over central and western Rajasthan around Thursday or Friday. A western disturbance is also likely to form as an upper-air system over north Pakistan and adjacent border areas of Punjab and Jammu, which will support the broader weather pattern.

According to Skymet, the monsoon is expected to advance further into more areas of Rajasthan and Punjab, as well as parts of Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, and the remaining regions of western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and Kashmir over the next 48 hours. After this progression, only parts of west Haryana, south Punjab, and west Rajasthan will remain outside the monsoon's reach.

The date for the onset of the southwest monsoon over the entire country was revised in 2019, the agency said. Before 2019, the normal date for complete coverage was Jul. 15, marked by the monsoon stream reaching the farthest areas of west Rajasthan, such as Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Phalodi. The revised normal date is now Jul. 8.  End
