NEW DELHI – Domestic airlines flew 14.06 million passengers in May, up 1.9% on year, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation Tuesday. This growth is much lower than the 8.5% on-year growth registered in April and 8.8% growth registered in March. Ratings agency ICRA had anticipated a growth of 4.1% on year for May.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo airlines continues to remain India's top domestic carrier, with a 64.6% market share in the Indian market. This is IndiGo's highest market share since the 65.2% registered in January. The budget carrier carried 9.1 million passengers in May, lower than the 9.2 million carried in April.
The passenger load factor of IndiGo airlines fell to 85.1% in May from 86.9% in April. Passenger load factors indicate the percentage of seats available capacity is used by paying customers.
Air India saw its domestic market share fall to 26.5% in May, down 70 basis points from April. However, it retained the second spot after IndiGo in the domestic market. The Tata group-led airline carried 3.7 million passengers in May, lower than the 3.9 million passengers in April. Its passenger load factor in May fell to 80.2% from 83.3% in April. The Air India group includes Air India and Air India Express.
Akasa Air retained its third spot in the domestic market, with a 5.3% market share in May, up 30 bps from April. The company flew 748,000 passengers in May, higher than the 713,000 in April, and its highest in 2025 so far. Its passenger load factor decreased to 91.4% in May from 93.0% in April.
Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd. saw its weakest market share so far in 2025 so far in May, at 2.4%. It flew 340,000 passengers last month, compared to 379,000 in April. Its passenger load factor fell to 84% in May, down 200 bps from April.
The one-time performance of IndiGo in May at Bengaluru, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata airports stood at 84%, followed by Air India group's 79.7%, and Akasa Air's 78.9%. SpiceJet had the weakest on-time performance at 50.1% in May. End
