MUMBAI – The water level in 161 key reservoirs across India rose to 58.030 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 55.519 billion cubic metres as of Jun. 12, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current level is 31.81% of the total live storage capacity of 182.444 billion cubic metres.
The southwest monsoon made an early onset over Kerala on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1. Following its initial advance across the Northeast and southern India, the monsoon stalled from May 29 to Jun. 15, which led to deficit rainfall across the country.
However, it re-entered its active phase with the Northeast, south, and parts of central India witnessing heavy showers. By Jun. 16, the monsoon had advanced further, covering additional areas of east, west, and central India. Data from the India Meteorological Department shows a marked improvement, with all-India cumulative rainfall at 114.8 mm as of Monday, 2?ove the long-period average, and rebounding from a 31?ficit till Jun. 15.
Reservoirs in the northern region held 5.418 billion cubic metres of water, 27.31% of their total live storage capacity. This was lower than 28.06% during the same period a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, which comprises Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar, the water level in reservoirs was 5.125 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 23.59% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 23.11% a year ago.
The water level in reservoirs in the western region stood at 12.132 billion cubic metres, or 32.48% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 20.59% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
Reservoirs in the central region held 13.883 billion cubic metres or 28.57% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, up from 25.22% a year ago. The region comprises Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh.
The water level in the southern region was 21.471 billion cubic metres, or 39.08% of the total live storage capacity of the 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was just 14.58% of the total live storage capacity, much lower than the current level. End
