Sitharaman asks tax officers to lower litigation, reduce backlog of appeals

NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Monday asked income tax officers to work towards quicker grievance redressal, reducing litigation, and clearing backlog of pending appeals. In a meeting with Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax and Principal Directors General Income Tax, Sithraman emphasised the need for reforms and taxpayer-centric initiatives.
"Smt @nsitharaman reviewed the performance of the Pr CCIT (Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax) regions on these key performance areas and urged the regional heads to work towards speedy grievance redressal, reducing litigation and clearing backlog of pending appeals," the income tax department said in a post on social media platform X. "Hon'ble FM (finance minister) emphasized that a strong focus must be maintained on taxpayer trust, compliance, and efficient tax administration."
The meeting--attended by Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava and Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Ravi Agrawal--focussed on taxpayer services, assessment and litigation management, and revenue collection and demand management. End
