MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Tuesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours, and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of Madhya Pradesh till Friday, the department said. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Bihar till Tuesday, over Vidarbha on Tuesday, over Jharkhand on Thursday, and over Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday, it said. 

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan till Tuesday and over Gujarat on Monday. The weather bureau forecast heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Gujarat till Sunday. 

 

In northwest India, the weather department sees very heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Friday, over east Rajasthan till Tuesday, and over Haryana, Punjab, and west Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of northwest India till Friday, the department said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland on Monday, while similar weather conditions are seen over Arunachal Pradesh till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of northeast India in the next seven days, the bureau said.

 

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Karnataka till Friday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Monday, Friday, and Saturday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning is seen over most parts of the southern peninsula till Friday, the bureau said.

 

As of Sunday, southwest monsoon has covered Madhya Pradesh and Ladakh entirely. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance over the remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu, and over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi in the next two days, the bureau said.  End
