NEW DELHI — Solar Energy Corp. of India Ltd. has issued a tender to purchase 724,000 tonnes green ammonia annually for its 13 fertilizer plants. The tender is part of the government's Strategic Intervention for Green Hydrogen Transition Scheme, or SIGHT Scheme, and the last date for bidding is Thursday, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said in a release.
"SECI (Solar Energy Corp.) will anchor demand aggregation and sign long-term offtake agreements, providing producers with market certainty over a 10-year contract period," the release said. The ministry called it a "landmark tender" for the offtake of green ammonia to decarbonise India's fertilizer sector.
Ammonia, an essential component in urea and other nitrogen-based fertilizers, is currently produced using fossil fuels. Solar Energy Corp.'s tender leverages renewable energy to produce green hydrogen and ammonia, thereby, promoting low emission and domestic production of fertilizer, the release said. Producing one kilogram of green hydrogen emits less than 2 kg of carbon dioxide, compared with up to 12 kg of carbon dioxide from conventional grey hydrogen.
The government is offering production-linked incentives of INR 8.82 per kg, INR 7.06 per kg, and INR 5.30 per kg for the first three years, respectively, amounting to a total support of INR 15.33 billion under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the release said.
India consumes approximately 17 million tonnes-19 million tonnes of ammonia annually. However, most of this is derived from imported natural gas, the release said. Solar Energy Corp.'s initiative is expected to reduce import dependence, limit exposure to global gas price fluctuations, and lower the trade deficit. End
