NEW DELHI – India's consumption of natural gas declined nearly 7% on year to 5.5 billion cubic metres in April, the Gas Exporting Countries Forum said in its Monthly Gas Market Report for June. The fall was primarily due to weaker demand in the refinery, fertiliser, and power generation sectors, which recorded declines of 38%, 12%, and 13%, respectively, the intergovernmental organisation comprising the world's leading gas exporters said.

Despite the decline, fertiliser production remained the largest consumer of natural gas, accounting for 26% of total demand, followed by city gas distribution at 23%, power generation at 15% and refining at 7%, the report said.

In the first four months of 2025, aggregated gas consumption in some of the major consuming countries, which account for 75% of global gas demand, increased 3% on year to 1.26 trillion cubic metres. Growth was recorded in the European Union, the UK, and North America, while Asia showed a decline. For the full year, global gas consumption is forecast to rise by 2%, influenced by continuous growth in the power and industrial sectors, per the report.

After a decline in April, gas consumption in the EU rebounded by around 2% on year in May to 19 billion cubic metres. This increase was largely driven by higher demand in the residential, power generation, and industrial sectors, according to the report. In the US, consumption of natural gas rose slightly by 0.6% on year to 66 billion cubic metres, driven by increased demand in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, which grew by 24%, 7% and 3%, respectively. In April, China's apparent gas demand recorded a growth of 2.3% on year to reach 34.8 billion cubic metres.

Global gas production in April was estimated to have increased by over 2% on year to 354 billion cubic metres. "All the main gas producing regions showed a positive production variation, with North America, Africa and the Middle East (West Asia) leading the growth," the report said. In Jan-Apr, global gas production was estimated to have risen by 0.6% on year to 1.41 trillion cubic metres, mainly driven by strong production growth in North America production, which counterbalanced the decrease in gas output of Eurasia, per the report.

In India, gas production declined by 1.3% on year to 2.87 billion cubic metres in April, marking the tenth consecutive month of fall. The decline was because of a reduction in offshore gas output, which constituted 73% of Indian production and recorded a decrease of 1.7% on year, along with reduced production from the onshore Rajasthan and Tripura fields, the report said. In Jan-Apr, the cumulative production in India amounted to 11.6 billion cubic metres, representing 3.3% on year reduction.  End
