NEW DELHI – The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday initiated a suo moto case against DLF Ltd. for allegedly felling nearly 2,000 trees across 40 acres of land in DLF Phase 5, Gurugram, Haryana, to develop a real estate project. The court, taking note of a news report in The Tribune newspaper, issued notices to DLF's managing director, the Gurugram Municipal Corp., and the State of Haryana.

The high court has asked the municipal corporation to file a status report on the case within a week. The court will hear the matter on Jun. 26. According to the news report, various residents and environmental activists have said the company was destroying the Aravallis and have launched protests and official petitions seeking an immediate halt to its activities.

The activists allege that DLF has been violating tree-felling permissions by working at night and conducting large-scale ground levelling. They have demanded an environmental impact assessment of the effect of these activities on local wildlife.

Representatives of the Aravalli Bachao citizens' movement had staged a protest outside Haryana Forest Minister Rao Narbir's residence. "They are destroying the Aravallis. Around 2,000 trees will be axed in this patch. If they (DLF) bought the land, then we say the sale was illegal and needs to be investigated," said Vaishali Rana Chandra, a trustee of Aravalli Bachao, as per the news report.

Thursday, shares of DLF closed 0.6% lower at INR 839.90 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
