Govt starts defence acquisition procedure review to modernise armed forces

NEW DELHI – The government has started a comprehensive review of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, to modernise the armed forces, the Ministry of Defence Thursday said. The ministry has formed a committee to carry out deliberations with stakeholders and has sought suggestions by Jul. 5.
The review aims to meet the operational requirements and modernisation of the Armed Forces in a timely manner to ensure national security, the ministry said in a release. The review also aims to align acquisition procedures with the government's policies and initiatives to achieve self-reliance and local defence manufacturing.
The committee, headed by Director General (Acquisition) Dipti Mohil Chawla, includes senior officers from the defence ministry and representatives from the defence industry and academia. The committee has sought suggestions on policy or procedural changes to streamline acquisition processes, ease of doing business, post-contract management, and adoption of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, among other things.
