NEW DELHI – Officials from the Department of Food and Public Distribution have conducted a series of inspection visits to key edible oil refining and processing facilities across India, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said in a release Wednesday. The inspections were aimed at reviewing the impact of the recent reduction in duties on the maximum retail price and price-to-distributor of commodities such as refined sunflower oil, refined soybean oil, and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein.

Inspections were carried out in states such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, where most edible oil processing facilities are located, the release said. Several edible oil refining and processing facilities across India have reduced the maximum retail price and the price-to-distributor of refined oils, as per the release.

The reduction in maximum retail price and price-to-distributor is in response to the reduction in landed cost of imported crude edible oils, made possible by the rationalisation of import duties. "Several processing units conveyed their commitment to implement further reduction in prices in the next few days as they continue to receive lower-cost shipments of crude oils under the revised duty structure," the ministry said in the release. "The initiative has helped stabilise prices in the edible oil market, and early signs suggest that the benefits are gradually reaching end consumers through lower retail prices."

The Centre had reduced the basic customs duty on crude palm oil, crude soybean oil, and crude sunflower oil by 10% on May 30. The overall duty on these edible oils was cut to 16.5% from 27.5%. The basic customs duty was halved to 10% from 20%, and the social welfare surcharge was cut to 1.5% from 2.5%.
