NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a meeting with financial technology companies on Wednesday in order to take general stock of the ecosystem, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Informist.
The meeting, first in many months, was attended by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Banking Secretary M. Nagaraju, and officials from the Reserve Bank of India, the source said.
Issues such as ease of doing business for fintechs and preventing financial frauds were discussed at the meeting, with fintechs also expressing their views on the same. The topic of unified payment interface merchant discount rate, however, did not come up, the source said.
The finance minister and the RBI had met the heads of fintech firms on Feb. 26, 2024 in the backdrop of RBI's regulatory action against Paytm Payments Bank. Sitharaman had back then suggested that the RBI, along with other regulators, should virtually meet start-ups and fintech firms on a fixed date every month and address their concerns and issues. End
