Under its influence, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha are also likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday, the department said, issuing a red alert for the two regions. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The weather bureau forecasts very heavy rainfall over parts of east and central India till Monday. Similar weather conditions are also likely over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Thursday, the bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is also seen over Gujarat on Wednesday and over east Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh till Monday, the department said.

Heavy rain is expected across most parts of west, northwest, and south India till Tuesday, it said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of northeast India in the next seven days, according to the weather bureau.

A wet spell with thunderstorms and lightning is likely across most parts of south peninsular India, the India Meteorological Department said. Strong surface winds, with speeds reaching 40-60 km per hour are also expected over the region. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala till Thursday and on Sunday, and over parts of coastal Karnataka on Monday and Tuesday, the department said.

Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions are likely to persist over parts of Tamil Nadu till Thursday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh till Sunday, the weather bureau said.

As of Wednesday, the southwest monsoon has covered Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh entirely. Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further over the rest of the northern Arabian Sea, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, over more parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh in the next 2–3 days, the weather bureau added.  End
