India's Apr-May natural gas import bill up 9% on yr as domestic output falls

NEW DELHI – India's natural gas import bill in the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose nearly 9% on year to $2.5 billion due to lower domestic production, according to a report by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. In terms of volume, gas imports in Apr-May fell over 1% on year to 5.95 billion standard cubic metres.
The country's natural gas import bill in May declined 14% on year to $1.2 billion, the report showed. Natural gas imports in terms of volume fell over 15% on year to 2.98 billion standard cubic metres in May.
Domestic natural gas production fell 4% on year to 2.98 billion standard cubic metres in May, and production in Apr-May fell 3% on year to 5.89 billion standard cubic metres. In May, the country's import dependency fell to 50.3% from 53.5% in the year-ago period, the data showed.
Meanwhile, the country's consumption of natural gas in May declined 10% on year to 5.92 billion standard cubic metres and consumption of natural gas in Apr-May fell nearly 2% to 11.76 billion standard cubic metres, the data showed. End
