India's Apr-May crude oil import bill down 17% YoY at $22 bln, May down 16%

NEW DELHI – India's crude oil import bill for the first two months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) fell nearly 17% on year to $22 billion, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said in a report. In terms of volume, the country's crude oil imports in Apr-May were 44.6 million tonnes, up 2.5% from the corresponding period a year ago, according to the report.

 

In May, the country's crude oil import bill declined around 16% on year to $11.3 billion, the report showed. In terms of volume, crude oil imports rose 6% on year to 23.3 million tonnes in May.

 

The country's dependency on crude oil imports in Apr-May was higher at 90.3% compared to 88% in the corresponding period a year ago. In Apr-May, domestic crude oil production fell 2% on year to 4.8 million tonnes while consumption of petroleum products rose slightly to 41.5 million tonnes, the data showed. The production of petroleum products in Apr-May fell 1.5% on year to 46.7 million tonnes.

 

The country's crude oil production in May fell 4% on year to 2.4 million tonnes. Production of petroleum products in May rose over 1% on year to 24.3 million tonnes while consumption of petroleum products rose around 1% on year to 21.3 million tonnes, the data showed.

 

In Apr-May, gross total petroleum imports, including crude oil and petroleum products, rose marginally on year to 52.6 million tonnes. The value of gross total petroleum imports fell 16% on year to $25.7 billion, the data showed. India's exports of petroleum products fell 3% on year to 9.7 million tonnes during Apr-May. The value of exports declined 24% on year to $5.7 billion during the period.  End
