MUMBAI – The water level in 161 key reservoirs across India fell to 55.519 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 56.802 billion cubic metres as of Jun. 5, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 30.43% of the total live storage capacity of 182.444 billion cubic metres.
The water level as of Thursday was up 39.65% from a year ago and 30.84% above the 10-year average for this period. The overall water level in reservoirs has fallen from the previous week as the advance of the southwest monsoon had paused during the period, leading to less rainfall across the country.
The northern limit of the southwest monsoon only restarted its advance post Saturday, after coming to a standstill post May 29. The onset of the monsoon occurred early this year, hitting Kerala on May 24, before pausing for more than two weeks.
In the northern region, reservoirs held 5.449 billion cubic metres of water, 27.47% of their total live storage capacity. This was lower than 31.71% during the same period a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
The water level in reservoirs in the eastern region stood at 5.392 billion cubic metres, or 24.82% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 24.28% a year ago. The region comprises Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Reservoirs in the western region held 11.223 billion cubic metres or 30.04% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, up from 21.42% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 14.693 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 30.24% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 26.67% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 18.762 billion cubic metres, or 34.15% of the total live storage capacity of the 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was just 13.99% of the total live storage capacity, much lower than the current level.
From Jun. 1 till Tuesday, the country received 61.18 millimetres of rainfall, 17% below the normal weighted average of 74.3 mm for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. End
